
AI in Advisory: Enhancing Compliance Without Replacing Judgment
Artificial intelligence is accelerating transformation across wealth management — but its most profound impact may be on compliance. For advisors and firms, AI presents an opportunity to enhance accuracy, reduce operational risk, and streamline workflows. Yet as with any emerging technology, it introduces new complexities that demand thoughtful oversight. In the regulatory environment, the guiding principle is clear: AI should enhance the oversight and decisions made by humans, rather than act independently, supported by appropriate governance, disclosure, supervision, and controls.
AI already plays a meaningful role in prepopulating forms, checking for inconsistencies in client information, analyzing patterns in historical data, and flagging potential exceptions before they reach a compliance officer’s desk. These capabilities can dramatically reduce the manual burden associated with KYC, KYP, AML, onboarding, documentation, and reporting. When used properly, AI allows compliance teams to focus on higher-value activities rather than routine administrative tasks. Consistent with Client Focused Reforms, these tools support but do not replace KYC, KYC and suitability obligations, and determinations remain human-made.
For example, our compliance team recently built a tool to automate procedure writing. Instead of drafting procedures manually, a user runs the tool against a simple input—like a bullet‑point list of steps—and it generates a full procedure using our standard template. The more detail the user provides, the richer the output becomes, from process steps to supervision requirements to escalation paths. All generated procedures are reviewed and approved by compliance professionals before finalization, ensuring appropriate human oversight and accountability.
Efficiency does not eliminate responsibility. Algorithms operate within a narrow frame: rules, historical patterns, and structured data. They cannot interpret subtle cues from client conversations, capture emotional context, or account for shifts in personal circumstances that affect suitability. These human elements are at the heart of regulatory obligations. Registered firms and individuals remain responsible under securities regulations. No model can assume the advisor’s responsibility to understand the client or the compliance officer’s duty to evaluate risk holistically.
The greatest compliance risk arises when AI is treated as a black box. If firms rely on unvalidated output, they may unknowingly introduce bias, omit relevant factors, or misinterpret a client’s intentions. Inaccurate data can lead to unsuitable recommendations, incomplete documentation, or inconsistent client treatment — all of which carry regulatory consequences. In order to mitigate this risk, firms should have governance structures proportionate to use including policies, procedures, use cases, data governance, controls, monitoring and risk assessments. Firms are expected to have books and records (including prompts and outputs), for supervision and auditability and must avoid ‘AI washing’. Bias prevention and mitigation, user training, and oversight of AI usage within the firm are expected practices. Privacy requirements also apply.
Another risk is overautomation. In the pursuit of efficiency, organizations may be tempted to automate too much — including tasks that require nuance or contextual understanding. My advice is to engage compliance early in AI deployment decisions – privacy, securities laws and other regulations may come into play when utilizing these tools and the earlier stakeholders understand legal and regulatory constraints, the more creative and proactive stakeholders can be in addressing those potential pitfalls.
Looking ahead, AI will likely expand its presence in monitoring, surveillance, risk scoring, and exception management. These advancements have the potential to enhance fairness, consistency, and transparency across the advisory process. But they must be grounded in responsible use. Advisors and compliance professionals remain the final stewards of client protection and ethical conduct. Firms should avoid using AI in ways that create or exacerbate conflicts of interest and ensure governance keeps human accountability at the centre.
Ultimately, AI’s role in compliance is to amplify human judgment, enabling informed, ethical decisions that place the client’s interests first. When paired with strong governance, AI can reduce errors, support consistency, and create more capacity for thoughtful oversight. But it cannot — and should not — replace the judgment, empathy, and accountability that underpin a trusted advisory relationship.
